Dr Maria M. Hadjimarkou

Dr Hadjimarkou received her PhD in Psychology from the City University of New York in 2004 following studies in Preschool Education (BA – University of Cyprus, 1996) and Psychology (BA, MA - Queens College of the City University of NY, 1999, 2003). After her PhD, she worked as a Visiting Fellow at the National Institutes of Mental Health in Bethesda Maryland (NIH/NIMH) and subsequently as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. Her area of research focused on the role of gonadal hormones on sleep and wakefulness. She has extensive training in techniques such as stereotaxic surgery, small animal EEG recordings as well as animal behavioral testing. She has published her work in peer reviewed journals such as Neuroendocrinology, the European Journal of Neuroscience, the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Brain Research and others. Dr. Hadjimarkou is a member of scientific societies such as the Society for Neuroscience and the Sleep Research Society. Since 2010 she has been working as an Assistant Professor at the University of Nicosia, Department of Social Sciences. Her research interests lie in the area of sleep and its effects on physical and psychological health.
