Dr Varnavas Panagiotou

Dr Varnavas Panagiotou is a Consultant Physician/Geriatrician and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer. He studied at Nottingham University Medical School, England, where he gained a Medical Sciences degree, BMedSci(Hons), and graduated as a doctor, BMBS, in 1983. He has worked in the UK ever since. He was awarded in 1999 a research doctorate, MD, following a series of original studies. He also gained a certificate in postgraduate medical education, PgCertMedEduc, and is Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), FRCP. He has long clinical experience with a focus on the care of older people. In 1996 he was appointed Consultant Physician & Geriatrician at Walsall Manor Hospitals NHS Trust, and a year later as Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (Keele University Medical School). In 2002 he transferred to the University Hospital North Staffordshire where he developed a successful Community Geriatrics service. On leaving that post in 2014 he worked for Stoke-on-Trent Clinical Commissioning as Consultant Geriatrician in Primary Care where he led an innovative service aimed at managing high-risk frail older patients in the community in order to avoid hospital admissions. Currently he is continuing his work as Senior Lecturer at Keele Medical School where he is active in undergraduate teaching, postgraduate courses, and research activities. In 2016 he played a key role in establishing a new Diploma/Masters degree course in Frailty & Integrated Care. He is also Medical/Geriatrics Adviser to the NHS Midlands and Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit. He is a member of the British Geriatrics Society, the British Medical Association, the West Midlands Physicians Association and the West Midlands Institute of Ageing & Health. He worked in the past as a Clinical Tutor of the Royal College of Physicians. He was also a Senior Lecturer at St George's, University of London - Nicosia University Medical School where he was instrumental in setting up and delivering the first clinical Geriatrics module. He is also the author of dozens of scientific articles on geriatric services research, medical education, blood pressure following stroke, primary and secondary stroke prevention, acute stroke, clinical audit, pharmacokinetics and other.
