I am Pavlos Petrou, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Cyprus. My strong belief in the importance of empathy, dignity, and personalized care in every individual’s healthcare journey has driven me to contribute to the mission of the International Institute of Compassionate Care. Through my experiences, I have witnessed firsthand the strong impact that a human connection with patients can have on their well-being. It’s incredibly moving to hear stories of patients finding strength and resilience through acts of compassion from their healthcare providers. However, such instances are unfortunately rare in today’s healthcare landscape, where profit-driven motives often overshadow the essential principles of compassionate care. I am eager to leverage my knowledge and genuine passion for assisting others to challenge this prevailing approach and contribute to promoting a culture of compassion and empathy in healthcare.
